45. Jonathan Freeman was born about 1788 in Middlesex Co, New Jersey.(2)He died between 1856 and 186 0 in Liberty Twp, Clarke Co, IA. Althoughthere is no concrete proof of the parentage ascribe d for Jonathan, acompelling amount of evidence of dates and places make the associationmos t likely. There is no other family that fit all the facts.

Jonathan Freeman was born in Middlesex Co, New Jersey probably in SouthBrunswick on the farm his fat her had inherited from his father.Jonathan, Sr obtained property in South Amboy, and Jonatha n, Jr and hisfirst wife lived on a portion of that tract after their marriage.Jonathan serv ed in the War of 1812 as a private in the company commandedby John Frazee and Lt Jacob Holme s under Maj Isaac Andrus' detachment ofthe New Jersey militia. He was drafted, and entered service i n June ofthat year at Inglestown, New Jersey and served for a period of twomonths. At som e point in time, before 1815, Jonathan and his first wife,Elizabeth Gordon migrated to Penns ylvania. Elizabeth died inPennsylvania, perhaps in the birth of the couples second son, Alexander...or shortly thereafter. Jonathan, his two sons and two or three ofhis brothers migrat ed to Ohio around 1816. There they bought propertyand began farming. They settled the area n ear the Guernsey and Muskingumcounty lines. In 1817, approximately two years after the deat h of hisfirst wife, Jonathan, carrying the burden of being both mother and fatherfor his tw o young sons met and married Mary Ann Cherry. Perhaps he hadknown Mary prior to his relocati on from Pennsylvania to Ohio, or had mether after settling in Ohio. Together, John and Mar y had 10 children, allbut one living into adulthood. The family appeared in the 1830 Guernse yCo census, and were in Muskingum county during the 1840 and 1850 census.Mary died sometim e between the 1840 census and the one taken in 1850. InNovember of 1852 while living in Musk ingum county, Ohio, Jonathan filedfor a bounty land claim which his service during the war o f 1812 hadqualified him. Sometime after that, Jonathan made his final move to thenew land s that were opening up in Iowa. In 1850, he still had two of hissons at home, and it is pres umed that they probably made the trip toIowa with him. How many of his married childrens fa milies migrated withhim at that time is not known. It is known that his son, Joseph and hi sfamily had migrated into Iowa by 1851. From Iowa, many of the extendedfamily unit graduall y began to move on to other parts of Iowa, andeventually on to Nebraska, Oklahoma and beyon d as they married and begantheir own lives. Jonathan died at Liberty twp, Clarke Co, Iowa so metimeduring the timeperiod of 1856-1860 and is buried in the Liberty cemetery. On his simpl e tombstore are: JONATHAN FREEMAN FRAZERS' N.J Mil. WAR1812. In all likelihood his daughter , Elizabeth (Jackson) cared for herfather until the time of his death. Elizabeth is buried i n the Libertycemetery, next to her father's grave.
