is the marriage source for both marriages. Salem Hedges is my great great grandfather but I am a descendant from his 2nd wife Ruth Affie Smith and in turn their daughter Rhoda Pearl Hedges. Rhoda Pearl was half sister to your ancestor Mary Nettie. first marriage to Sarah Maria only lasted until 1868 when she died. Mary Nettie Hedges was born in 1866, well before Salem's 21 SEP 1869 marriage to Ruth Affie who was about 2 years old when her birth mother died.
know from the 1880 census that Salem was a minister when Mary Nettie was 14 years old. We also know from Ruth Affie's pension card, that Salem was wounded (invalid) in the civil war in 1864 (13 OCT 1864 123d Illinois Infantry) and it was a few months later he married Sarah Maria on 18 Mar 1865.
